Hair loss can ruin our overall appearance and can lead to stress. There are so many products out there on the market claiming their products actually work. From shampoos to treatments and from topical solutions to oral in-take of vitamins, there are literally thousands of products which can hinder the decisions of choosing the right product. Although these products may help, it’s not proven since these claims are just made from the companies who produce these products. Therefore I’m going to list the products what are actually proven to treat genetic hair loss.

    1. Finasteride (Propecia)

Finasteride is an oral prescription medication sold generically and under the brand name Propecia. It’s approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for male pattern baldness. Finasteride slows down hair loss and stimulates the growth of new hair. You need a prescription from the doctor so you need to visit a local dermatologist. This drug is only for men.

    How does finasteride work?

This medication works by decreasing the amount of a natural body hormone (DHT). Decreasing the amount of DHT leads to increased hair regrowth and slower hair loss. Hair growth on other parts of the body is not affected by finasteride. Finasteride may be most effective if you take it before you notice too much hair loss.

How long does it take to work?

It can take 3 to 6 months before you start seeing results with finasteride. It’s also not a permanent fix. If you stop taking it, hair loss will resume.

    2. Minoxidil (Rogaine)

Minoxidil is a topical treatment that should be applied directly to the scalp. It’s sold over the counter and does not require a prescription. Unlike in North America (US & Canada), this is not sold in Costco in Korea. You’ll need to visit the local pharmacy in Korea to get it.

    How does minoxidil work?

Minoxidil widens blood vessels under the skin, increasing blood flow. Its exact mechanism for treating hair loss is not completely understood even till this day. Minoxidil is most effective for androgenic alopecia when used early. It may also be more effective when used with finasteride which I mentioned above. You may notice that your hair starts to shed early on when you start using minoxidil. This is common and indicates that your individual hairs are shifting from the resting stage to the growing stage.

How long does it take to work?

You need to use it twice per day on your scalp. You’ll notice the thickness of your hair after 3-4 months. Like finasteride, minoxidil only works for as long as you use it. Once you stop treatment, hair loss will resume.

    3. LLLT laser comb and cap

Laser combs and caps can stimulate hair follicle growth with low-level, laser light.

    How does it work?

The laser targets the hair follicles and stimulates the cells, which aids in hair growth.

How long does it take to work?

It takes about 4 months to see some noticeable difference. You should use it every day for about 20 minutes.
